Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 - everything we know so far!
Volkswagen vans have unveiled their latest version of the iconic Volkswagen Transporter van, introducing the Volkswagen T6.1!
Volkswagen Transporter T6.1
Even though the sixth generation of the Volkswagen Transporter van came out in 2016, Volkswagen vans are keen to give the medium van a comprehensive update. Since its inception, the VW Transporter has reached total sales of close to 12 million units worldwide in various forms including Bulli, Multivan, Caravalle and California versions.
Updated appearance of the new VW Transporter
The T6.1 gets an updated appearance featuring a larger, unified grille which meets the headlights in the same way as the Volkswagen Arteon fastback and Volkswagen Touareg SUV. The headlights employ LED technology, there's also refreshed taillights at the rear, giving the T6.1 a more modern appearance.
The van appears sharper and sleeker in design than its predecessor, whilst the two tone theme above makes the Multivan version stand out. It gets even more impressive when you step inside the new Volkswagen Transporter van, where you'll find a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and the latest 9.2-inch MIB3 infotainment system from Volkswagen vans, giving an incredibly high-tech feel to the interior and dashboard in particular.
Added Technology of the new VW Transporter
Behind those two screens in a host of added technology, with even base models now getting Cross Wind Assist as standard. This system automatically stabilises the van to improve safety once strong winds are detected. There's also been a switch from hydraulic power steering to electromechanical power steering so that Volkswagen vans could implement a lane assist system as part of a host of newly added driver assistance systems including rear traffic alert with automatic emergency braking.
Engines of the new VW Transporter
Power is delivered to the Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 by a selection of the brand's latest TDI diesel engines delivering outputs ranging from 90ps to 200ps. Opting for the 150ps model allows you to specify a dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4Motion, whilst the twin-turbodiesel engine comes as standard with the DSG and optionally with all-wheel drive.
New electric drivetrain of the new VW Transporter
Volkswagen vans have teamed up with ABT to develop a fully electric version of the VW Transporter with either a 38.8 or 77.6 kWh battery options. With the larger of the two engines, the e-Transporter will have an official NEDC range of 249 miles. The new T6.1 will launch in first countries in the autumn.

Chairman of the Management Board at Volkswagen vans, Thomas Sedran had his say on the new model, commenting:
