Volkswagen e-Transporter lights up Geneva Motor Show
Above is the Volkswagen e-Transporter van which has been modified by tuning company ABT for the Geneva Motor Show, Vansdirect reveals all!
Volkswagen e-Transporter
Volkswagen vans in partnership with German tuning company ABT have revealed a modified version of the Volkswagen e-Transporter van at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The all-electric van based on the Volkswagen Transporter is due to join European markets later this year, however it is not being developed within Volkswagen vans which was the case for the Volkswagen e-Crafter van, instead the e-Transporter is being developed by ABT. This is why the tuning company have given this version a makeover for the Geneva Motor Show with their own styling modifications.
ABT modifications
For this special edition Volkswagen e-Transporter van, ABT have added their own Aerokit bodykit, this adds skirts to the front and rear bumpers of the van, as well as a revised grille and rear wing. Special louvred tailpipe covers also hide the fact that the Volkswagen Transporter electric van doesn't have exhaust tips. At each corner of the van, there are 20-inch ABT Sport GR wheels with Continental tyres, a lowered suspension is also fitted to the van.
Finishing the ABT makeover, the white Volkswagen e-Transporter van is finished with green and grey graphics, similar to those used on the Audi RS 6-E on display at Geneva in 2018. Under the skin of the van, the only thing that has been modified is the suspension, meaning that this model has the same running gear as the Volkswagen e-Transporter model on show at the Hannover Commercial Vehicle Show in September 2018.
Running gear
The e-Transporter is powered by a 109ps electric motor that delivers 200Nm of torque, whilst the standard 37.3kWh battery offers a range of approximately 130 miles. There will also be a 74.6kWh battery available delivering a range of approximately 250 miles. Plugging the van into a fast charger allows the standard battery to be charged to 80 percent capacity in just 49 minutes and 98 minutes for the larger option.
Same cargo capacity
One particular highlight of the Volkswagen e-Transporter van is that it boasts the same cargo capacity as the standard Volkswagen Transporter T6 van at 6.7 cubic metres. In addition to this, because ABT convert vans from the Volkswagen vans production line, it means the electric drive train can be added to any version of the Volkswagen Transporter T6 range including the Caravelle executive shuttle and the California camper van.
The e-Transporter van will join the market at the back end of 2019, however before that, the ABT produced Volkswagen e-Caddy van, also on display at Geneva will be available in the second half of this year.
