What Is The Speed Limit For A Pick-Up Truck 2025?
Did you know that the vast majority of pick-up trucks sold in the UK are subject to different speed limits to that of regular passenger cars?
If not, then you may be unaware that you are risking receiving a significant fine and/or points on your driving licence if you are found to be in excess of the limit specific to your vehicle, even if they are below the widely-known national limit for passenger cars.
Pickup Truck Speed Limits
UK speed limits are dictated by the unladen kerbweight of a vehicle, the reasoning being a heavy vehicle driven at higher speed could pose a greater risk to a driver, passenger, other road users, pedestrians or cyclists in the event of an accident.
As such, the DVLA states that a vehicle 2040kg or more is classified as an LCV (light commercial vehicle) and are therefore subject to speed limits which are 10mph slower on single and dual carriageways.
Since newer pick-up trucks have become heavier over the time, the vast majority of the models available in the UK exceed this weight limit and are therefore bound by speed limits for LCVs. However, it doesn’t apply to every pick-up truck on sale (see the table below to check).
Why Do Some Pick-up Trucks Have Different Speed Limits?
This is due to the Department for Transport's classifications of vehicles, with a dual-purpose vehicle defined as:
"A vehicle constructed or adapted for the carriage both of passengers and of goods or burden of any description, being a vehicle of which the unladen weight does not exceed 2040kg (two imperial tons)"
These classifications were established in 1987, where there wasn't a one-tonne pickup truck on the market which exceeded the 2040kg unladen weight, however many new pickups for sale exceed this weight with their increased sizes, stronger construction and host of new safety systems.

Which 2025 Double Cab Pick-Ups Are Affected?
Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger in double cab configuration exceeds the 2040kg weight limits, meaning each of its engine - 2.0-litre Turbodiesel, 3.0-itre V6 Turbodiesel and 2.3-litre Petrol Plug-In Hybrid - in any other its trims (XL, XLT, Tremor, Wildtrak, Wildtrak X, Platinum, MS-RT, Stormtrak) are subject to the revised UK speed limits. However, the single cab 2.0-litre Turbodiesel XL does come under 2040kg.
KGM Musso
The KGM Musso is only available in double cab configuration with a single 2.2-litre Turbodiesel engine, though buyers can choose between the standard length version across two trim levels - Rebel and Saracen - and an extended length Saracen+ trim. Each KGM Musso model is over 2040kg though.
Maxus T60 Max
The Maxus T60 Max comes with a single trim and engine option - a 2.0-litre Turbodiesel - and exceeds the 2040kg weight limit.
Maxus eTerron 9
The new electric Maxus eTerron 9 greatly exceeds the 2040kg weight limit with its kerbweight of 2880kg, the product of it being fitted with a heavy battery-powertrain
Toyota Hilux
The Toyota Hilux is 2120kg in its lightest state with either a 2.4-litre Turbodiesel or 2.8-litre Turbodiesel, putting it over the 2040kg weight limit and therefore making it subject to speed limits.
Volkswagen Amarok
The Volkswagen Amarok is also heavier than the permitted sub-LCV weight limit of 2040kg across the range, including 170PS, 205PS and 240PS engine models.
Which 2025 Double Cab Pick-Ups Are Not Affected?
Isuzu D-Max
The Isuzu D-Max is currently the only pick-up truck on sale in the UK that comes under the 2040kg weight limit and is therefore classified under the same speed limit restrictions as passenger cars. Even in its heaviest guise, the Isuzu D-Max Utility Double-Cab weighs in at 2000kg.
