Van leasing is a fantastic way to get a new van and spread the costs according to your budget – all without the responsibility of ownership.
It’s important to make well-informed decisions when choosing a company to start a lease with to ensure you choose the right provider. In this article, we take you through the things to look out for in a good van company to help you decide.
Is the van leasing company reputable?
First off, you’ll want to make sure you choose a van leasing company with a good reputation. Nothing gives you an indication of whether a service is right for you quite like what other people are saying about it.
You don’t want to choose a van leasing company with a poor reputation. Be sure to thoroughly research any potential providers to make sure they provide the customer service you deserve.
Not to toot our own horn, but 97% of customers would recommend Vansdirect to their friends or family. Customers love the experience provided by our helpful customer service team and the ease of buying their new van. One of many reasons to buy a new from Vansdirect.
So, a great customer experience and smooth processes are something you’ll want to look out for when choosing a van leasing provider.
Does the van leasing company comply with financial regulators?
One of the most important things to check is that the van leasing company complies with the regulations of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
This protects you as a consumer and ensures fair treatment and ethical practice throughout the buying process. All to make sure you receive the best experience possible.
They will also need to comply with the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BRVLA), which is the trade body for the industry.
You should be able to find this information on the company’s website. If they are not FCA authorised, you are not protected against mistreatment or unfair practice.
What van leasing reviews do they get?
Reviews are a great indication of the way a van leasing company interacts with its customers and the level of service provided.

What types of van leasing are available?
A sign of a good leasing company is one that offers multiple finance options, as different businesses have different needs.
At Vansdirect, you’ll find a range of flexible finance options which can be tailored to your individual budget. If you decide that a lease agreement may not be the right option for you, not to worry. We also offer Hire Purchase (HP) and Contract Hire which may better suit your needs.
Hire Purchase (HP) is great for those looking to spread the costs of a new van, with a view to owning the van at the end. You’ll pay a small deposit on your new van, followed by fixed monthly rental instalments until the agreement ends. After paying the final balloon payment, the van will be all yours.
With Contract Hire, you’ll pay an initial rental fee and monthly instalments over an agreed period. At the end of this time, you’ll then hand the van back and choose your next van from the latest range.

FAQs about van leasing
Is leasing a work van a good idea?
Yes, if you want lower costs and you don’t want to own the van outright at the end of your finance contract. Leasing could free up money to spend elsewhere on your business. You’ll still get a high-quality new van with a manufacturer’s warranty, and there are other benefits to be had such as tax savings, which is particularly handy if you’re self-employed.
What is required to lease a van?
At Vansdirect, we only offer van leases to business owners and sole traders. You’ll need to complete a Business Finance Application Form and provide information about:
- Your company – including its name, address, company registration number and annual turnover
- Your director – including their name, date of birth and marital status
- Your bank – bank name, account number and sort code
If your business is newer (I.e. less than two years old) or have previously been rejected for finance, you may need to provide additional information. This may be in the form of business bank statements (up to 3 months’ worth), management accounts and your director’s guarantee.
What happens if you damage a leased van?
If you damage your van during your lease, it’s not the end of the world! That said, you should aim to ensure the best of care throughout your lease agreement to avoid any extra charges at the end. Some instances of wear and tear are acceptable such as:
- Chips no larger than 8mm in diameter, so long as the base metal or material remains intact
- Dents under 15mm in size, provided all else remains in good condition
- Repaired chips, scratches and dents, so long as the work completed has been done to a high standard
Chips or damages larger than those mentioned above, or poorly completed repairs will not be acceptable. Nor will rust or discolouration in the paintwork, or damage caused by any additions made outside the terms of your lease agreement.
What are the tax benefits of leasing a van?
When leasing a van, the tax benefits you’ll receive may vary depending on the specific type of lease:
- For Contract Hire, all rental payments are tax-deductible and VAT reclaimable
- Reclaimable VAT will be calculated based on 80% of the business’ mileage
You must ensure you understand all responsibilities for repayments before signing your agreement. If you have any questions or would like anything explaining in more detail, get in touch with a member of our team.
Is it more tax efficient to buy or lease a van?
Ultimately, this will depend on your individual circumstances. There are pros and cons to both options, and it’s a good idea to look into these before making a decision. At Vansdirect, you’ll have complete flexibility when it comes to getting your new van, as we offer both buying and leasing options. We’ll be happy to take you through these to help you decide which is best for you.
