New Volkswagen vans to be fitted with autonomous emergency braking

New Volkswagen vans to be fitted with autonomous emergency braking

A new van range that is made up of the VW Caddy, VW Transporter, VW Crafter and new VW Crafter vans, all new Volkswagen vans will now be fitted with autonomous emergency braking!

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)

Experts in van safety; Thatcham, have described AEB as "the most significant development in vehicle safety since the seat belt." They also believe that AEB has the potential to prevent in excess of 120,000 casualties over the next ten years. VW vans will be the first to be fitted with AEB as standard across their range, Thatcham has called upon all major new van manufacturers to follow the lead of VW vans and apply the technology across all their new vans immediately.

How does Autonomous emergency braking work?

The AEB on VW vans, works using a radar integrated into the front of the van, the systems are designed to alert the driver of impending accidents and automatically apply the brakes at low speeds preventing a collision.

Stage one of the technology working is an audio and visual warning if the gap between the van and an obstacle in-front of the van closes at an excessive speed. If the driver doesn't react to these warning signs, the brakes will jolt representing the immediate danger of a collision. Full braking power is then immediately available to the driver; if the driver doesn't brake heavily enough, the braking pressure will then intensify to the level required so that the new van comes to a halt before colliding with the obstacle.

The city emergency braking function will completely stop the van with no driver input, if the driver fails to react to an obstacle at speeds up to 18mph.

Autonomous emergency braking on VW vans

Volkswagenvans head of Marketing Sarah Cox is quoted as saying, "producing safe, reliable vans has been at the heart of our brand for over 60 years. But technology is advancing at a pace and we're continually seeing more and better ways to keep drivers safe on the road." Thatcham strongly believe that this technology will see a decrease in deaths and serious injuries in vans, a 2015 Euro NCAP study showed that autonomous braking led to a 38 percent decrease in rear-end crashes. Volkswagen vans have be praised as 'trailblazers' in the van safety market.
