New Ford Transit van
The Ford Transit van is so iconic, that the Transit van label is commonly used as a generic term for white vans of a certain size and shape. The so called Transit van segment is more competitive and crowded that it has ever been, with a host of rivals including the likes of the Citroen Relay, Peugeot Boxer and Mercedes Sprinter van to name just three.
Whilst previously there only used to be a few Ford Transit vans for sale, now Ford vans are using the Transit van label more than ever before. There's a range of small vans labelled the Ford Transit Courier and Ford Transit Connect and the Ford Transit Custom medium van, all of which sit below the 'proper' full-size Ford Transit van range.
It's the full-size 2.0-tonne Transit van range that we are focusing on here and keeping in touch with tradition, you are about to buy your Transit van in a massive range of shapes and sizes, including: panel vans, double cabs, tipper trucks, minibuses and chassis cabs. All in all and including roof height and wheelbase options, Ford vans have said there are a staggering 450 ways to buy a new Transit van.
What is the new Ford Transit van like to drive?
The new Transit van is pretty nimble on the road despite being a large van. New power-assisted steering features on the new Transit van, which automatically adjusts to your speed and driving conditions, with a lighter feel on the steering at lower speeds for improved manoeuvrability and firmer feel at higher speed for greater control. The chassis is stiffer than previous models and slightly lower to improve the dynamics of the van and limit body roll in corners.
The new Transit van offers a smooth and comfortable driving experience, rivalling the very best vans for comfort in the large vans segment such as the Mercedes Sprinter van. Standard on the new Ford Transit van is a six-speed transmission, with high overall gearing making the new Transit van well suited to longer motorway journeys with low cab noise and surprisingly impressive fuel efficiency which has been improved courtesy of improved aerodynamics and mild hybrid technology.
The new Transit van takes the stress out of driving, with a host of advanced technology to help you work more efficiently, safer and smarter. There's an abundance of safety features such as blind spot information and cross traffic alert. Active park assist and intelligent adaptive cruise control are also incredibly useful pieces of technology to keep stress levels down.
What about the interior?
Whilst its predecessor was all about space and functionality and whilst there are still a host of storage options available in the incredibly spacious cabin of the new Ford Transit van, there's also improved levels of comfort and technology featured. The cab is more car-like and user friendly than previously, whilst the fit and finish is more durable to withstand the toughest of jobs.
The new Ford Transit van comes with a built in 4G modem to help van fleet management, this works with the new FordPass Connect system to connect to telematics services and the FordPass mobile app which allows a host of features such as smartphone remote access to the van. As well as the built in 4G modem for an enhanced overall experience, other new technology includes the latest Sync 3 infotainment system with voice control from Ford vans.
What about the load area?
The Transit van has always been renowned as a fantastic load carrier, the latest model is no exception with up to 15.1 cubic metres of load volume available, whilst access to the load area has never been easier with a power side load door and a 270-degree lockable rear door, not to mention optimised opening height and a rear access step to assist further. Tie down points ensure that your cargo is safe and secure
There's also improved visibility in the load area, there's a new LED downlighter mounted on the rear of the roof helping you keep working even when the sun has disappeared, this system will automatically turn off the light should the battery get low.
Payload of the new Ford Transit van has also improved over its predecessor with the new Ford Transit van being able to carry up to 80kg more than previous models on rear-wheel drive Transit vans and up to 48kg more on front-wheel drive Transit vans.
