Your favourite commercial vans

Your favourite commercial vans

After last week's news that there are now over four million commercial vans on the UK's roads, we found ourselves wondering which vans are on our roads in the highest numbers.

Sales figures show which new commercial vans are being sold, but that doesn't give us the whole picture as new vans only account for a percentage of all the vans on Britain's roads.

The Nation's favourite commercial vans

Citroen Berlingo (150,699 vans on UK roads)

Twenty years in the commercial van market have enabled the Berlingo to become one of the UKs favourite vans. Not to mention the wealth of excellent standard features. A relatively small van, the Berlingo is best suited to urban surroundings and smaller loads, although it does offer the flexibility to extend load area lengths with a modular bulkhead.

Transit Connect (174,933)

This may be Ford's first commercial van in this list, but it's not the last - a result of their domination of the UK van market. The Transit Connect is a small van designed for light work, urban environments and lower running costs. It excels on all three, with an already impressive payload that can be increased to just over a tonne. Originally brought to market in 2002, the Connect is one of Ford's four Transit models: the Courier, Connect, Custom and the good 'ol Transit.

Vauxhall Vivaro (190,092)

The Vauxhall Vivaro van is built right here in the UK. WhatVan's Medium Van of the Year for 2016, the Vivaro has comfortably outsold the Renault Trafic in the UK despite being essentially the same van, rebadged. The Vivaro has only been on sale since 2001 which might explain its placing on this list. A facelifted version was launched in 2014 with new features designed to modernise this popular commercial van.

Mercedes Sprinter (195,456)

Mercedes' Sprinter is a true slogger with excellent load-carrying capacity. Having been on sale for over 20 years it has become a popular base for conversions, such as tippers and minibuses. An excellent commercial van for tradesmen or couriers who need maximum space and payload.

Volkswagen Transporter (237,092)

The Volkswagen Transporter is another classic, with the iconic 'camper van' T1 version first making an appearance in 1950. The Transporter is hugely popular with private owners; Volkswagen's medium van has become almost synonymous with the surf scene. The current (T6) generation was born with a significant upgrade to the T5 Transporter in 2015.

Ford Transit (641,690)

Ok, so this one was obvious. The Ford Transit van has been around since 1965 - over 50 years - so it was inevitable. In fact, there are still many 'legacy' Transits on our roads - a testament to their quality. What may come as a surprise is that the combined sales of the Transit and Transit Connect surpass almost everything else in the list. The Ford Transit range remains as popular as ever, with Ford's commercial vans outselling their nearest rivals by 3:1.
