Pikes Peak is the highest summit of the southern front range of the Rocky Mountains, in North America. Volkswagen Motorsport are synonymous with producing vehicles that make the steep 12.42 mile climb in record time.
Pikes Peak record holders
The I.D. Buzz Cargo van concept is designed to look like the original Volkswagen Transporter, the model on show at the LA Motorshow has been wrapped in a design which pays tribute to the Pikes Peak record holder in the form of the Volkswagen I.D. R. The creation from Volkswagen vans is powered by a 150kW electric motor delivering 201ps, which transmits power through a single-speed transmission to the rear wheels of the van offering a top speed of 99mph. There's also the possibility of an all-wheel-drive version in the future should Volkswagen vans borrow some technology from the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Microbus.
Impressive range
The I.D. R excels in the area of performance, whilst the I.D. Buzz Cargo van concept really excels in the area of range, offering between 200 and 340 miles depending on whether you opt for the 48kWh or the 111kWh battery pack. Charge times are also expected to be impressive, with the van capable of recovering 80 percent of its charge in as little as 30 minutes with a 150kW DC fast charger, the van also features a solar roof which will increase range by 9.3 miles per day.
Loaded with technology
The van will be loaded with technology, firstly featuring keyless entry and go via a smartphone app, there'll also be an autonomous driving mode labelled I.D. Pilot and an automated stock-tracking system for the shelving in the load area of the van. The system is controlled by a tablet integrated into the bench seat of the Volkswagen vans and automatically registers the parcels on board, tracking their destination, weight and type. The system then has the ability to plan the most efficient route, taking customer appointments into consideration and recording delivered parcels. The system can also be operated when in autonomous mode, whilst the driver's seat can rotate 15 degrees to the right to allow the tablet to be operated comfortably.
Other features for the van that really has it all include: A 8.6 square-foot floodlight, a folding workbench, power-tools and a 230V electrical supply.
