Vision V Concept Teases Next Generation Mercedes-Benz Vito Van

Vision V Concept Teases Next Generation Mercedes-Benz Vito Van

The next generation Mercedes-Benz Vito will be teased by a brand-new concept incoming from the German marque next month.

Called the Vision V, there are precious few details of the concept vehicle other than it is likely to be revealed in April and will preview the first products of Mercedes’ all-new modular van-based platform.

The importance of the new Mercedes-Benz Vito shouldn’t be underestimated. Part of Mercedes’ triple-pronged effort in the LCV market – alongside the Sprinter and Citan – the new Vito van will be launched alongside the next generation of its passenger equivalent, the V-Class.

The significance of the new Vito is best measured by what is happening beneath what will otherwise be a fresh exterior design as Mercedes-Benz prepares to debut its new Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA).

Described as ‘modular, flexible and scalable’, the platform is designed to give Mercedes greater versatility to develop an electric powertrain as part of the original design. This contrasts with the current Mercedes eVito, which has limitations because of the EV powertrain being integrated into existing ICE-centric architecture.

By conceiving the platform to accommodate an electric powertrain from the ground up, Mercedes can maximise the benefits that come with going EV, such as increased range, faster charging speeds and better power delivery.

Sources indicate Mercedes is aiming to exceed the 300-mile range mark with the new pure EV Vito, which is more than the current Ford E-Transit Custom (236 miles) and Vauxhall Vivaro Electric (205 miles). It would also better the range of other native EV vans, such as the VW ID.Buzz Cargo (276 miles) and Kia PV5 (248 miles). The current Mercedes eVito is limited to 160 miles of range.

Moreover, as a modular platform, the next generation Mercedes-Benz Vito will still be available with a conventional ICE and possibly include hybrid models too.

For now, the Vision V will be the first clue as to what the Vito/V-Class will look like when it hits the roads officially later in the year.

In the meantime, however, images released by Mercedes-Benz of a prototype V-Class MPV undergoing extreme winter testing in the Arctic circle [above] offer their own subtle hints beneath the heavy camouflage, though the Vito will only likely share a similar front-end design.
