Toyota Hilux Gets Mild Hybrid Pick-Up Treatment
The Toyota Hilux has been given a range refresh with the addition of a new 48V mild hybrid option to its pick-up truck line-up.
In a first for the venerable Hilux, the 48V mild hybrid system is designed to help lower running costs by providing electric power assistance to the existing 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine.
The hybrid powertrain is available now in the UK as part of the Toyota Hilux double cab.
The introduction of a new 48V lithium-ion hybrid electric motor allows for stop-start technology to be available on a Hilux for the first time.
The system works to automatically cut the engine when the pick-up is stationary before firing up instantaneously once the clutch pedal is depressed.
By working in tandem with the engine, the rapid delivery of electric power also helps to make on and off-road driving more responsive and smoother.
While the specific requirements needed for pick-up truck platforms makes it difficult to incorporate electric motors into existing architecture, the compact dimensions of the 48V hybrid system allows it and components to be positioned higher in the vehicle to avoid atmospheric interference.
It is for this reason that the Hilux Hybrid is still able wade in 700m of deep water, just as the standard model can.
Multi-Terrain Select System Gets Toyota Hilux Debut
In addition to the new hybrid powertrain, the updated Toyota Hilux 48V Hybrid is the first to receive the firm’s dedicated Multi-Terrain Select system.
Operated by an MTS switch and mode selector on the centre console, twisting it adjusts the Hilux’s drive control of drive force, suspension and hydraulic brake pressure to enable better traction, manoeuvrability and stability according to the conditions.
It features six distinct settings - Sand, Mud, Rock, Dirt, Deep Snow and Auto – with a digital multi-information display featuring a different background for each.
