The small vans to consider for your new 17 plate van

The small vans to consider for your new 17 plate van

Buying a new van has never been easier - as evidenced by last year's sales figures of over 375,000 units. With so many different options to consider when buying a new van - including van leasing, Contract Hire and Hire Purchase - deciding which one to opt for can be more difficult than choosing a new van!

If you're looking at getting a new small van as the new 17-plate launches, take a look at the best models to consider this year.

The best small vans on the market this year

Renault Kangoo

Renault updated its Kangoo range back in 2015, with improved engines, lower running costs and improved levels of standard equipment. Even the entry-level 'Business' trim comes with digital radio and air conditioning.

It's available in two lengths - the longer model is known as the Maxi. These models offer a usable loadspace of 4 cubic metres and can carry up to 800kg. One of the Kangoo's most attractive features is its low fuel consumption - Renault's official figures claim a return of 62.8mpg.

Peugeot Bipper

Peugeot's Bipper is one of three vans that share the same body along with the Citroen Nemo and Fiat's Fiorino. As such, all three look alike and share interior dimensions however equipment levels are where the real differences lie. Choose the Bipper in Professional trim and you'll find air conditioning, a half-height bulkhead, semi-integrated TomTom navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

It's available in just one size with one engine option - a 1.3-litre HDi with 80PS that emits just 115g/km of CO2 and returns a claimed 64.2mpg. The Bipper is able to carry 660kg of cargo in its 2.5 cubic metre loadspace which is extendable to 2.8 cubic metre with the front passenger seat folded down.

Citroen Nemo

Yes, it shares its name with a well-known Disney character but don't let that put you off. The Citroen Nemo is a great compact van that's easy to drive and deceptively spacious. So much so that it can even fit a Euro pallet in the load area! The Nemo's 2.5 cubic metre loadspace can accommodate up to 590kg.

It's available in a single length with a choice of diesel or petrol engines. Both offer excellent fuel economy - particularly the diesel unit which returns up to 62.8mpg. Enterprise models come with air conditioning, rear parking sensors, ladder frame bulkhead and a nearside sliding side door.

Citroen Berlingo

The Citroen Berlingo was launched way back in 1996, although it has gone through several revisions since then. The current model is approaching its 10th birthday yet shows no sign of decline. It remains one of the UK's most popular vans - due in part to its versatility and excellent level of standard equipment on Enterprise models.

It's available in two lengths with two payload options of 625kg or 850kg. The aforementioned Enterprise models come well-equipped, with satellite navigation, vehicle tracking, parking sensors and digital radio among the included features.

Mercedes Citan

If refinement is your thing, then the Mercedes Citan is one of the best small vans out there. Car-like levels of refinement make the Citan a real pleasure to drive. The Citan is based on the Renault Kangoo, which explains why it may look a little familiar.

It's available in three lengths - compact, long and extra-long. Payloads can differ significantly; the Compact model carries up to 435kg while the Extra-Long model can accommodate up to 770kg. Standard features include daytime running lights, USB/Aux-in connectivity and a full-width bulkhead.
