What is the speed limit for a pickup truck?
Thinking of buying a pickup truck? Do you know that the speed limits may change dependent on which model you choose? Our team of new van experts at Vansdirect take a look at all of the pickups for sale in the UK market!
Pickup truck speed limits
Speed limits vary between different UK pickups for sale, this can leave many with a nasty surprise if they are unaware of how fast they are legally allowed to travel in their pickups. Not only are they different from model to model, some pickups even have different speed limits between trim levels.
Some of the newer pickups for sale are heavier than previous models and as such are too heavy to be classed as 'dual purpose vehicles' and as such are subject to standard LCV speed limits which are 10mph slower on single carriageways and dual carriageways.
Why do some pickups have different speed limits?
This is due to the Department for Transport's classifications of vehicles, with a dual-purpose vehicle defined as:
"A vehicle constructed or adapted for the carriage both of passengers and of goods or burden of any description, being a vehicle of which the unladen weight does not exceed 2040kg (two imperial tons)"
These classifications were established in 1987, where there wasn't a one-tonne pickup truck on the market which exceeded the 2040kg unladen weight, however many new pickups for sale exceed this weight with their increased sizes, stronger construction and host of new safety systems. The speed limits for those pickups which exceed this weight are the same in built-up areas (30mph) and motorways (70mph), however they are lower on national speed limit dual carriageways (60mph instead of 70mph) and single carriageways (50mph instead of 60mph).
