New vans enjoy a record-breaking 2016

New vans enjoy a record-breaking 2016

New vans and pickups hit record levels in 2016, despite December experiencing a drop in demand of over 10 percent when compared to the same period in 2015.

Over 375,000 new vans were registered last year, up by 1 percent year-on-year as 2016 was confirmed as a record-breaking year for growth in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market. This continues the trend of the last few years, with 2016 the fourth consecutive year of growth.

Sales of new vans continue to grow

The rise in demand for pickups continues with December 2016 seeing growth of over 50 percent when compared with December 2015. This was to be expected after many new model launches in the last 12 months, including the brand-new Fiat Fullback - based on Mitsubishi's L200.

Almost 48,000 pickups were registered in 2016 which represents an increase of 17.6 percent year-on-year. The best performing pickup? No surprise here - it's the Ford Ranger with a staggering 13,292 units shifted and it even makes the top 10 LCV sales for 2016.

Large vans dominated the LCV market however, with sales up 4.8 percent to 232,948 units - a 62 percent market share.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "Another record year for light commercial vehicles is great news, even with marginal growth, and underlines the fundamental strength of the sector. To ensure future fleet investment and growth in this important market, buyers - and manufacturers - are looking for a strong economy and business environment."

One-third of new vans sold are Ford

Almost 1 in 3 new vans sold in 2016 were from Ford, who consolidated their position as the market leader with sales growth of 14.6 percent to post a final total of over 118,000 units sold. The manufacturer has FOUR different vans in the top 10 for the year; Ford Ranger, Ford Transit Connect, Ford Transit and Ford Transit Custom.

Sales of the Ford Transit Custom fell just short of 50,000 units - well clear of its big brother in second place. The traditional Transit remains a favourite with just shy of 30,000 units registered in 2016. So the Transit Custom is far and away Britain's favourite van, but how did the others do?

The Vauxhall Vivaro took third place, less than a thousand units ahead of the Mercedes Sprinter which edged out Volkswagen's Transporter by just 440 registrations. The Vivaro also beat its twin, the Renault Trafic which sold over 7,000 less vans than the Vivaro to end up in 7th place. Another interesting battle saw the Citroen Berlingo shade the alternative Peugeot Partner by less than 600 units while the top 10 is rounded off by the Ford Ranger.
