New Renault Trafic To Debut With Innovative Smart Connected Tech

New Renault Trafic To Debut With Innovative Smart Connected Tech

Renault has revealed more details about the upcoming next generation Trafic, which is due to launch later this year alongside two brand-new commercial models, the Estafette and Goelette.

The venerable mid-size Renault Trafic is due for a major overhaul to follow on from the launch of the new Renault Master in 2024.

One of Renault's longest-serving nameplates, the Trafic has been a lynchpin of the firm’s LCV range since 1980 but has any significant redevelopment has been limited to just two occasions in the last 45 years.

As such, the prospect of a fourth generation Renault Trafic is a big deal, an occasion not lost on the French manufacturer’s if the first images revealed last year is anything to go by.

One of three LCV vans Renault revealed, the Trafic was joined by two new models – the tall but compact-in-length Estafette and the Goelette, which is designed primarily for conversions.

Both the Estafette and Goelette are revived nameplates having formed the basis for Renault’s commercial vehicle range prior to the launch of the long-serving Master and Trafic line.

Notably, the new models have been developed by Renault in collaboration with Flexis, a new organisation involving Geely, the Chinese automotive owners of Volvo, Polestar and Lotus.

Modular Platform, Clever Brains

While it is likely the Renault Trafic will be available with both diesel and electric powertrains when it is formally launched, the prototype revealed last year was a Trafic E-Tech BEV version.

However, it sits on a brand-new modular platform – which will also underpin the Estafette and Goelette – that has been designed to incorporate electric and ICE powertrains seamlessly using a centralised software architecture and a ‘connected, intelligent operating system to control, analyse and upgrade vehicle functions quickly and reliably’.

What this means is that the models should be able to maximise the package underneath them without compromising the other, regardless of whether it is electric or diesel. As such, the electric models should offer class-leading range, while diesel versions won’t be hampered by a reduced payload.

Renault’s party piece, however, is the integration of a special operating system that will allow its vehicles to be updated OTA (over the air) quickly and efficiently when new innovations are introduced or if faults are detected.

Specialist models – such as ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles – will also have built-in dedicated apps to help centralise operations, allowing vehicles to communicate details, including time, route, contacts and remarks, with one another easily. Fleet users will also be able to develop their own profile to allow for specific vehicle settings according to that business.

The operating system, developed by Ampere, is intended to promote greater safety and convenience for business users, as well as allow the models to hold their value better if the model gains regular software updates during the period of ownership.
