New Renault Trafic E-Tech Reveals Interior, 20mins Recharge
Renault has revealed more details about its latest generation Renault Trafic mid-size van, which includes a glimpse of a high-tech new interior designed to complement its ‘hyper-connectivity to the cloud’.
The new Trafic is one of three new Renault LCVs getting their public debut at this week’s Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, alongside the Estafette and Goelette.
Though markedly different from one another, each model has developed around a brand-new modular ‘skateboard’ platform, with the variance in the three vehicles demonstrating the adaptability of the underpinnings.
Developed by FLEXIS – a collaborative effort involving Renault and Chinese manufacturer Geely – the platform is designed to house an electric powertrain from the outset.
As such, Renault claims the Trafic will set a new standard for recharging speed thanks to its 800V technology which allows for a 15 to 80% recharge in just 20 minutes. WLTP range is quoted at 280 miles, which is more than the similarly sized VW ID.Buzz Cargo and forthcoming Kia PV5.
More than 2.5 million units of the Renault Trafic have been built since the nameplate was introduced in 1980.
It therefore makes the launch of the third-generation iteration a crucial model for the French manufacturer.
As such, little beyond the name is being carried over for the new model, not least inside where the latest Renault Trafic reveals a modern-looking 10-inch instrument cluster and a 12-inch central screen facing the driver.
Key to the Trafic’s appeal is the promise of being ‘hyper-connected to the cloud and the power grid’. All three new LCV models come with a central, scalable and flexible SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture.
Through this, models will receive automatic OTA (over-the-air) updates to ensure a ‘long service life with obsolescence issues’, while benefiting the eco-system of the professionals who use them.
Renault also touts class-leading storage capacity, including a number of partitioned compartments, a document holder under the central screen and a deep shelf on the ‘tube’ dashboard.
In terms of outright cargo space, the Trafic boasts a 5100 litre load bay in L1 guise, rising to 5800 litres for the larger L2.
It is all wrapped in a contemporary new look defined by a fresh design language that includes a blacked-out front-end bar that houses the headlights and displays the Renault logo.
As well as the Estafette – a slender, tall van designed for urban trips - and Goelette – an adaptable conversion van – the new Trafic is likely to spawn a sister Nissan Primastar version.
