The axe will fall on the Mercedes-Benz Citan next year after the German manufacturer confirmed intentions to slim its commercial vehicle range and focus on larger models.
The smallest model in Mercedes’ van-based line-up, the Citan was launched in 2012 to sit below the long-serving Vito and Sprinterin the Stuttgart marque’s line-up.
A sister version of the Renault Kangoo and Mercedes-Benz Citan, the Citan has comprised two generations since it was introduced, with the latest iteration having been hit the road in 2021.
However, Mercedes has confirmed the French-built Citan won’t get a third generation and will instead pull the model from its range in 2026.
It is the second Mercedes-badged commercial vehicle to fall by the wayside in recent years after the shortlived Mercedes X-Class pick-up truck was dropped from its range in 2020.
"In line with our Mercedes-Benz Vans strategy 'Growth in profitable segments', we are targeting our investments and further optimising our product portfolio,” a statement read.
"Therefore, we will focus on the Midsize and Large size Van segments in the future and end our engagement in the Small Van segment next year."
Mercedes Readies Next Generation Vito, Sprinter
The exit of the Citan comes as Mercedes puts the finishing touches to its fourth generation Vito van, which is expected to go on sale early 2026.
Developed around an all-new modular platform – named VAN.EA and VAN.CA – the new Vito has been designed from the outset to accommodate an electric powertrain. As such, the new Vito EV is tipped to set new standards for the class in terms of range and power.
Tellingly, Mercedes has confirmed it will give priority to the electric Vito by launching it first before the range expands with the introduction of the more conventional internal combustion engined Vito later in the year.
