Kia Plots Domination Of Electric Van Market With Four New Models

Kia Plots Domination Of Electric Van Market With Four New Models

The all-new Kia PV5 is set to spawn a wide-spanning range of electric vans and people-movers aimed at making the Korean manufacturer a major player in the commercial segment.

The PV5 received its much-anticipated world premiere in February to herald Kia’s debut entry into the commercial segment.

Similar in size to the Ford Transit Custom, the Kia PV5 is a direct rival to the Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo and promises a 248-mile range, plus a host of ingenious technological features.

Though Kia could have potentially given the PV5 more range, bosses say its priority was to ensure a competitive price tag to ensure success in what is a competitive and difficult sector to gain a foothold in for a new brand.

For the time being, Kia is focused on displaying the versatility of the PV5 and has duly joined forces with tech giants Samsung and LG to developed OTA (over-the-air) software updates and AI solutions designed to improve workplace efficiency, as well as greatly reduce running costs.

At the recent Seoul Motor Show, Kia displayed two custom-versions of the PV5 built in conjunction with LG; the Kia PV5 Spielraum, a mobile office - complete with coffee machine and smart mirrors – and the Kia PV5 Glow, which is designed for the ultimate picnic.

The models were showcased to present the different possibilities with the PV5, a strategy that will be complemented by a plan to bring as many as 14 different versions of the model to the market. Though exact details are yet to be confirmed, they are expected to include crew cab, campervan and extended wheelbase variants.

The Kia PV5 Is Just The Start

The Kia PV5 represents just the start of the firm’s plan to flood the commercial vehicle sector with multiple models.

Using its nomenclature as a guide, Kia has confirmed PV3, PV7 and PV9 models are on the way.

The smallest of the trio, the Kia PV3, is likely to go up against the Citroen Berlingo and For Transit Connect and will be the first pure electric model from a mainstream manufacturer to join the SCV (small commercial vehicle) sector.

The Kia PV7 and PV9, meanwhile, will sit in the large commercial vehicle class to rival the Ford Transit and Peugeot Boxer.

The PV7 has already been shown as a concept, with the PV3 and PV9 set to the receive the same prototype preview treatment later in the year.
