KGM Rexton Commercial Blurs Lines Between SUV And Van
KGM is set to expand its commercial offerings in the UK with the launch of a van based on the KGM Rexton SUV.
The South Korean manufacturer currently relies on the KGM Musso pick-up truck as its sole commercial model alongside a handful of passenger models but will bolster its range to include the Rexton Commercial.
Put simply, the model is a van-based conversion of the Rexton SUV. As a result, KGM has removed the rearmost seats, added a bulkhead and blacked out the rear windows to open-up an unobstructed 2200-litre cargo bay accessed by a lifted tailgate.
From the outset, the changes are not obvious with the Rexton Commercial appearing almost identical to that of its SUV equivalent.
While passenger cars converted into vans are nothing new in the commercial sector, there are very few currently available in the UK.
However, the move to reclassify the tax rules for double cab pick-up trucks – many of which are derived from SUV running gear – could spark a revival of the segment.
Indeed, with pick-up trucks boasting four/five seats being categorised as family cars, thus consigning double cab models to company car tax regulations – including the KGM Musso - the Rexton Commercial’s two seats allow it to be considered under BIK (Benefit-In-Kind) rules. This means it is eligible for capital write-down and has a first-year VED of £345.
With a wide-opening powered tailgate, KGM claims the Rexton Commercial can accommodate ‘several standard Euro pallets’, while it quotes a payload capacity of 700kg.
Significantly, the Rexton Commercial maintains the same utilitarian workhorse traits that have earned the SUV version a loyal following in the UK.
This includes its body-on-frame construction, which improves rigidity on the move, plus a generous towing capacity of 3500kg (unbraked 750kg).
The Rexton Commercial also offers selectable all-wheel drive complete with a low ratio setting for especially heavy off-road work. While the drivetrain operates as a two-wheel drive on the road, it can be switched to four-wheel drive when necessary.
Available in three trim levels – K30, K40 and K50 – the Rexton is powered by a 2.2-litre Euro6 compliant diesel engine.
