Isuzu D-Max EV Electric Pick-Up Makes World Premiere Bow
Isuzu will become the first manufacturer to introduce an electric pick-up truck with a one-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity to the European market following the unveiling of the Isuzu D-Max EV.
The model, which receives its world premiere at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham this week, will begin pre-sales towards the end of 2025 before hitting the road in early 2026.
The Isuzu D-Max EV is being touted as the European market’s ‘first-ever fully electric, fully capable commercial pick-up truck’.
To date, the only other electric pick-up truck available in the UK has been the Maxus T90, though this was succeeded by the eTerron 9 recently, while the Ford Ranger is to be made available with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option soon.
However, while the T90 was hamstrung to a lower payload and towing capacity to accommodate the electric powertrain, Isuzu D-Max EV strikes a better balance between the electric and diesel variant to ensure little compromise in terms of workhorse attributes.
As such, the D-Max EV has permanent four-wheel drive and retains impressive off-roading credentials, such as water wading up to 600mm, ground clearance of 210mm and 30.5 and 24.2-degree respective approach and departure angles.
The model itself is powered by a 66.9kWh lithium-ion battery with dual motors combining to a power output of 188bhp and 325Nm of torque – which compares with the standard 1.9-litre turbodiesel’s 164bhp and 350Nm of torque.
In terms of range, the D-Max EV is quoted with a combined WLTP figure of up to 163 miles.
Furthermore, it comes with regenerative braking and an Eco mode – which limits some power functions, such as air-conditioning – to help recuperate charge and increase range.
The Isuzu D-Max EV, which will be distinguished from its turbodiesel counterparts with 'electric blue' inserts on the grille, will be offered in two trim levels – DL40 and V-Cross – and is to be available in Extended Cab and Double Cab body configurations.
