The Renault Kangoo Z.E. has been the best-selling small electric van in Europe since its launch in October 2011, today at Vansdirect we got hands-on with one, exploring the features that make it so popular!
Renault Kangoo Z.E.
Renault vans are on their second generation of the Renault Kangoo electric van and whilst range has always been a concern for electric van buyers, the electric Renault van has a NEDC range of 170 miles, suggesting that even before setting foot in the Renault van it has gone a massive way to alleviate a number of fears and assumptions regarding electric vans. Increased range has been made possible with a new 33kWh battery and an upgraded energy density system, meaning optimised battery performance without the requirements for additional modules.
Driving the Renault Kangoo Z.E.
So the range has been increased, which is all well and good, but what you really want to know is what it's like to drive! We got behind the wheel of the Kangoo Z.E. and we were very impressed by our findings, we felt the Renault van. was the perfect van for city driving. It's hard to notice the 44kW electric motor coming to life when you turn the key, we simply slid the automatic gearbox into drive mode, let go of the handbrake and off we went. Off the lights we felt the van accelerate faster than most, whilst the van is effortless to drive in and around town, with responsive steering making it easy to navigate around the sharpest of bends at ease, whilst potholes and bumps with absorbed with the cushioned ride. Overall we found the Kangoo Z.E. an enjoyable driving experience, whilst the lack of any noise in the cabin took the stress out of the commute.
Inside the Renault Kangoo Z.E.
The Renault van has a comfortable cabin, whilst the materials feel well put together and modern. The only downside is the lack of air conditioning as standard, however this is available as an option should you wish. The cabin is also incredibly spacious for a small van with seating for two separated by a central storage tray.
Load area
The load area of the Renault Kangoo Z.E. is the same as the diesel model, offering 3.0 cubic metres of load volume. The van we got to put through its paces was the standard ML short wheelbase model, the Kangoo electric van is also available as a LL long wheelbase model offering class leading load capacity in the small electric van segment of 4.6 cubic metres. The Renault van is also available as a maxi crew van model and hence is incredibly versatile.
Charging the Renault Kangoo Z.E.
Unfortunately the van wasn't with us for long enough to time exactly how long it takes to charge, however Renault vans tell us that charging of the Renault Kangoo Z.E. is now faster and easier than its predecessor, with a new charger twice as powerful as the one it replaced. A full charge is possible in six hours when attached to a 32A socket, it can also be topped up with 22 miles of range in as little as one hour.
