Ford Transit Custom - everything you need to know

Ford Transit Custom - everything you need to know

In case you didn't know - which is very unlikely - the Ford Transit Custom is one of the four different Ford Transit models from Ford vans one for each van sector.

Ford Transit Custom

The attractive Transit Custom was created when Ford vans decided to follow the lead of Volkswagen vans and Mercedes vans by splitting their Ford Transit panel vans into two size segments. The Ford Transit Custom caters for the medium van market and is, after three years on the market, the van that all other aspire to. Since its launch, rivals like the Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch have all received upgrades and facelifts in order to keep pace with the Ford Transit Custom.

Basically, the Ford Transit Custom is aimed at users requiring up to a tonne-and-a-half of payload capacity while the 'full-fat' Ford Transit takes over from there on up.

A 2.0-litre diesel engine comes with a six-speed transmission and is available with three different power outputs, 105PS, 130PS and 170PS.

Torque ranges from 360Nm on the smallest engine up to 405Nm on the 170PS variant, whilst all offer fuel economies in excess of 40 miles to the gallon.

The comfortable cabin

The cabin of the Ford Transit Custom is refined and comfortable. The driving position is as good as it gets in a van, while the seat itself is 8-way adjustable. Features include air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter, DAB radio, steering wheel-mounted controls, heated front seats, cup holders and two 12v electrical sockets. Getting these features as standard will depend on the trim level you choose: Leader trend, limited or sport.

Awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP (the only van in its class to have achieved this), Ford vans have really thought-out the safety aspects of the Custom. The list includes ESP, Roll-over mitigation, load adaptive control, hill-start assist, full width steel bulkhead with load-through flap, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a heated windscreen and a Thatcham category 1 alarm.

Ford offer the Ford Transit Custom with short or long wheelbases and a low or high roof, providing between 6 and 8.3 cubic metres of loadspace. Due to the load-through flap in the bulkhead (both standard) even the short wheelbase version can accommodate items up to 3m in length. This smaller version of the Ford Transit Custom can also carry three Euro pallets. Payload capacity ranges from a modest 683kg right up to 1507kg.

There's good news for the hygiene and safety-conscious; all Custom models come with an 'easy-clean' floor liner and tie-down points in the load area.

As usual, there are the crew cab (which Ford vans call 'Double-cab-in-van') and kombi options if you need them - but conversions are covered by the biggest Ford Transit van in the range.
