Euro 6 on the agenda as fleets encouraged to give their views

Euro 6 on the agenda as fleets encouraged to give their views

Fleet operators are being asked to give their opinions on the expansion and earlier implementation of the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) in London.

It's expected that an in-depth consultation will be launched this month after Londoners gave their support to the new Mayor of London's proposals.

Four in five (79%) are behind Mayor Sadiq Khan's plan to accelerate the introduction of ULEZ from the scheduled 2020 date to 2019, while 71 percent said they wanted the zone to be expanded as far as the North and South Circular.

New charges

Another proposal with overwhelming support was an early £10 emissions surcharge - coined the 'T-charge' - for the worst polluting vehicles passing through central London, starting next year. 81 percent supported the additional charge, which would apply to all vehicles complying with pre-Euro 4 standards (predominantly vehicles registered before 2005) and would be payable ON TOP of the existing congestion charge.

Results also revealed strong support for Mayor Khan's suggested diesel scrappage scheme to assist Londoners in switching from the most polluting vehicles.

Khan said: "Londoners were clear they supported my proposals, with a clear majority in favour of not only introducing the ULEZ earlier in 2019, but extending it beyond central London. They are also strongly in favour of the T-charge and, most importantly, Londoners were clear that government needs to do its bit to help meet the new ULEZ standards and that it should fund a scrappage scheme."

Traffic accounts for an estimated 60 percent of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions in London, of which cars contribute 28 percent, HGVs 18 percent, buses/coaches 16 percent while vans account for 9 percent. Concerns over air quality, along with a growing population have become a priority for Khan. The current population is 8.3million and it's anticipated that it will reach 10 million over the next 15 years, the equivalent of the population of Birmingham and Leeds moving to London.

Euro 6 vans

Under current plans, the ULEZ will require diesel cars and small vans to be Euro 6-compliant and Euro 4 for petrol engines. Large vans and minibuses with diesel engines will have to be Euro 6-compliant while again, petrol must adhere to Euro 4.
