Rivian R1T electric pick-up
Tesla are forever grabbing headlines and none more so when they announced that they'd be producing a pick-up, this upcoming Tesla pick-up model looks to have some serious competition when it does join the market in the form of the Rivian R1T, with the American EV start-up brand announcing that they would launch the R1T at the Los Angeles Motor Show. The T1T is a 5.5-metre long, five-seater pick-up which has been designed primarily with the US market in mind, however it will be part of the plans from Rivian when they join the European market in 2021.
In terms of size, the new pick-up is longer, wider and taller than a Nissan Navara, weighs 2.6-tonnes and can tow a staggering 4,990kg. It has a plethora of features including: double wishbones up front, multi-link suspension at the rear dynamic roll control, adaptive dampers and ride-adjustable air suspension.
Phenomenal capabilities
There'll be three battery sizes available with the R1T: 105kWh, 135kWh and 180kWh and although it has a kerbweight of approximately 2.6 tonnes, Rivian have boasted that the new pick-up will be capable of travelling from 0-60mph in as little as three seconds. Equally as impressive is the ability to travel between 230 and in excess of 400 miles on a single charge, dependent on which battery you were to opt for.
The R1T is powered by no fewer than four electric motors, each offering up to 197ps and a staggering 14,000Nm of torque. The brand also boasts that this gives their creation excellent off-road ability, which is a massive factor for target customers, who are believed to desire an electric van that is comfortable in rough and challenging conditions.
Off-road specialist
The new pick-up has approach and departure angles of 34 degrees and 30 degrees respectively, with adjustable air suspension meaning that ground clearance can reach as high as 360mm, whilst maximum wading depth is one metre!
Handy storage space
Not only does the new model boast excellent off-road capabilities, it also makes use of the sandwich platform to make room for storage space which is particularly handy. You'll find a 330-litre front boot area, a 350-litre compartment between the back door and rear wheels and a 200-litre sealed bin beneath the floor of the rear bed.
The ideal vehicle
Rivian boss RJ Scaringe had his say on their fantastic new pick-up: "I started Rician to deliver products that the world didn't already have, starting with a clean sheet, we have spent years developing the technology to deliver the ideal vehicle for active customers."
