Electric, Pick-Ups On The Up As Ford Dominates UK LCV Sales Charts
Sales of BEVs and pick-up trucks proved popular in March as sales of both segments saw a significant uplift year-on-year.
The figures come despite overall sales for light commercial vehicles (LCV) experiencing a fourth consecutive monthly decline year-on-year.
Pick-up trucks jumped 40.6% in March 2025 compared with the same month in 2024 according to the latest figures from the SMMT as buyers rushed to take advantage of the current tax regulations before a major change occurs in April.
From April 2025, the payload capacity measure for determining how pick-up trucks are classified in the eyes of the government is scrapped in favour of a new tax regulation measured on the number of seats in any vehicle.
Double-Cab Pick-Up vehicles will be subject to BIK (Benefit-In-Kind) tax rate change using a figure based on CO2 emissions, like a standard company car. As these models generate higher emissions than most vehicles, taxpayers could be paying out up to £800 a year more on their car tax.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) also saw a 40.3% increase compared to March 2024, increasing its market share to 8.3%.
However, the positive figures were negated by slowing demand large commercial vans, which account for the largest share of the overall LCV market. It means March 2025 sales were down -2.8% compared the same period in 2024, while year-to-date sales after three months stands at -10.2% compared with last year.
Ford Dominates UK Sales Charts
In terms of outright sales, Ford once again held firm as the nation’s favourite commercial manufacturer by locking down the top three positions for March 2025.
The Ford Transit Custom was once again on top of the ranking with more than 10% of the entire market, followed by the Ford Ranger pick-up and large Ford Transit. The trio also hold the top three positions on the year-to-date chart.
Elsewhere, the Vauxhall Vivaro was best of the rest, followed closely by the Renault Trafic, while the Citroen Berlingo ranked as the best-selling SCV (small commercial van).
