What makes a good pickup truck? Things that might come straight to mind are practicality, versatility, and easy handling.
All boxes that the award-winning Isuzu D-Max ticks with confidence. Read on for our review of one of the industry’s most popular models.
Exterior features and dimensions
From Company Car and Van’s Pick-up of The Year in 2024, to the Fleet News Best All-Terrain Workhorse in 2023. The Isuzu D-Max has gone from strength to strength, and it’s not hard to see why.
Part of that strength lies in its strong, robust design, allowing it to approach any workday with pure confidence.
With a strengthened ladder chassis and extensive underbody protection, the D-Max is ready to get stuck in. Its 800mm wading depth makes cutting through water a breeze, all with safety in mind.
Designed for both practicality and aesthetics, the Isuzu D-Max looks and plays the part. Standard features include automatic headlights with high beam assist for crystal clear vision. The single cab is given 16” wheels, while extended and double cab models get larger 18” wheels.
Other exterior features include a black rear bumper with an integrated sidestep for added convenience. Plus, a tailgate damper with the double cab. Not to mention a range of body colours to help enhance your look. Choose from Splash White, Mercury Silver, Obsidian Grey, or Onyx Black.
With longer, wider proportions, the Isuzu D-Max makes lighter work of heavier loads. We’ve broken down the key dimensions of each body style for you below:
Length (mm) | 5,305 | 5,305 | 5,265 | 5,265 |
Width (mm) | 1,810 | 1,810 | 1,870 | 1,870 |
Height (mm) | 1,770 | 1,770 | 1,790 | 1,790 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 3,125 | 3,125 | 3,125 | 3,125 |
Depending on the model you choose, you’ll get between 1,205-1,140kg of payload to transport your cargo or equipment.
Interior cab features
Moving onto the interior, the Isuzu D-Max is available in several different trims which will determine what you get inside. These are the Utility, DL20, DL40, and V-Cross.
Utility is the standard trim and offers a decent cabin set-up if you’re looking for something designed simply with work in mind.
Features include:
- Cloth upholstery
- Six-way adjustable driver’s seat (with lumbar support)
- Vinyl floor covering
- Driver’s footrest
- Manual air conditioning
- Height and reach adjustable steering wheel
If you’re not a huge fan of technology, not to worry. The Isuzu D-Max Utility keeps things simple with steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls.
There’s also a DAB radio with two speakers or Bluetooth connectivity if you want to connect your smartphone. For ultimate nostalgia, there’s a CD player if you want to stay traditional. A USB port is also on hand for charging any devices on the go.
Moving up the range, you’ll receive luxuries like heated front seats, leather upholstery, and power lumbar support for more comfort.
Engine performance
When it comes to performance, you want something that does the job and does it well. That’s where the Isuzu D-Max impresses, with its range of RZ4E four-cylinder diesel engines.
These produce a net power output of 164PS at 3,600rpm, enabling a maximum speed of 112mph. It also accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.7 seconds.
What’s more is that, despite its size and power, the Isuzu D-Max still manages to remain efficient. Fuel consumption is between 27.6-28.5mpg at its lowest and 39.7-40.9mpg at its highest. A Stop & Start system helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions by stopping and restarting the engine when still.
Speaking of emissions, the D-Max produces around 212g/km depending on the model, which is again reasonable given its larger engine. In 2025, it’ll produce none at all, with the launch of the all-electric D-Max – range to be confirmed.
Driving experience
The Isuzu D-Max comes with a whole raft of driver assistance features as standard to help smoothen your drive. These include:
- Cruise Control
- Hill Start Assist & Hill Descent Control
- Trailer Sway Control
- E-Call
These help you enjoy greater confidence behind the wheel no matter how heavy the load, making every drive safer.
All-wheel drive offers improved grip on more challenging terrains, as does rear differential lock. This prevents the wheels from spinning freely, reducing the risk of losing traction or spinning out.
The Isuzu D-Max passes all the safety tests, awarded a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, making it a reliable choice for your business.
Load bay size and accessories
As one of the most popular pick-ups in the industry, the Isuzu D-Max is a leader when it comes to loading.
The load bed offers plenty of space to safely store and transport larger loads, from euro pallets to bulkier cargo. Dimensions for the loading bay vary slightly between models, as you’ll see outlined below:
Length (mm) | 2,315 | 2,315 | 1,805 | 1,495 |
Width (mm) | 1,530 | 1,530 | 1,530 | 1,530 |
Depth (mm) | 465 | 465 | 490 | 490 |
To personalise it more to your needs, the Isuzu D-Max is available with a wide range of accessories. From traditional accessory packs like the All-Purpose Pack or Work Pack, to exterior items like side steps and sports bars.
To protect your pick-up, you can add on a sliding bed tray or a front bumper guard. Inside, heavy-duty black canvas seat covers and illuminated sill covers should help keep the cabin pristine. Load covers are also available to help protect your cargo en route.
