2025 Nissan Townstar: Everything You Need To Know

2025 Nissan Townstar: Everything You Need To Know

Nissan has a rich history in the commercial sector with the Nissan Townstar currently fulfilling a brief as the smallest offering in the firm’s van-based range alongside the Primastar and Interstar.

Based on the same platform as the Renault Kangoo and Mercedes-Benz Citan, the Nissan Townstar gains all the benefits of a platform that is one of the most practical and useable in the class, while retaining the reassurance that comes with the manufacturer’s renowned after-sales care.

Is The Nissan Townstar A New Model?

Fairly new. The Nissan Townstar moniker was introduced in 2021 to bring it into line with the manufacturer’s other ‘stars’ in the range, the Primastar and Interstar.

Its arrival saw the Townstar replace both the NV250 and NV200 to sit more conventionally in the SCV (small commercial vehicle) class as a rival to the Citroen Berlingo, Toyota Proace City and Ford Transit Connect.

Indeed, while the long-serving NV200 largely sat in a category of its own somewhere between the small and mid-size van sectors with its tall but slim profile, the NV250 was a short-lived mild rebrand of the Renault Kangoo.

While the Townstar continues to share much of its mechanicals with the latest generation Kangoo – as well as the Mercedes-Benz Citan – Nissan has made a more convincing job of giving it its own identity with a chiselled front-end more in-keeping with signature look of its passenger models like the Qashqai and Ariya.

Interestingly, the Townstar differs from most rivals by eschewing the option of having a diesel variant in favour of having only petrol and electric versions available.

Nissan has some good experience in the commercial EV van sector though having held the title of best-selling electric van with the e-NV200 until it was discontinued.

2025 Nissan Townstar: Dimensions, Trims & Body Styles

Length: 4488mm (L1), 4910mm (L2)
Height: 1864mm (L1), 1854mm (L2)
Width: 1860mm
Wheelbase: 2716mm (L1), 3100mm (L2)
Payload: 762kg (Petrol), 486kg (Electric)
Cargo Capacity: 3300 litres (L1), 4300 litres (L2)
Towing Capacity: 1500kg

The Nissan Townstar prioritises outright available space by being able to accommodate two Europallets easily, especially in larger L2 guise.

Indeed, the Townstar is usefully longer and taller than the Stellantis Group models – the Citroen Berlingo, FIAT Doblo, Peugeot Partner, Vauxhall Combo and Toyota Proace City – which is translated into a cavernous amount of space being available in the cargo bay.

In L1 guise, the Townstar measures 4488mm, rising to 4910mm in larger L2 specification, which translates to class-leading room in the loading bay totalling 3.3 cubic metres for the former and a vast 4.3 cubic metres for the latter.

Opt for the Townstar L2 and you’ll also get sliding doors on both sides of the van and because they are wider than on the L1, they provide enough access room to load a Europallet.

Though the Townstar does lack the bulk load-through hatch of the aforementioned Stellantis models, it can be specified with a dual front passenger bench, allowing for a three-seat configuration. For those with a need for more passenger space, a Crew Van with five perches is available.

Maximum payloads will differ depending on whether you specify the petrol or electric variant. While the petrol version can handle 689kg to 762kg payload, the added weight of an EV powertrain raises the overall kerbweight of the electric model. As such, EV payload drops to 486kg, which is less competitive than that of the Citroen e-Berlingo.

2025 Nissan Townstar: Engine, Performance & Drivetrains

1.3-litre Petrol (128bhp)
45kWh Electric (121bhp)

Nissan keeps the powertrain options for the Townstar simple with a choice of a single petrol engine and a single battery powertrain.

It means the Townstar differs from most rivals in that it offers a petrol engine in place of a diesel one, which is the result of Nissan’s commitment to phase diesel across its entire range.

Nevertheless, the Townstar 1.3-litre TCe is turbocharged and capable of 128bhp, while 240Nm of torquey pulling power is competitive with that of diesel-powered equivalents. Better still, petrol is of course cheaper at the pumps, not to mention cleaner, while 42mpg remains competitive with its diesel rivals.

The Nissan Townstar EV makes use of a 45kWh battery generating 121bhp and enjoys instantaneous acceleration from a standstill, while it generates 245Nm of torque.

Better still, it will average 178 miles of range (according to WLTP figures) and can be used on both a rapid charger for a quick boost of battery energy or use an 11kW wall box at home for a full overnight charge.
